......... Meaning .........

arivaiyar nenju urukAp puNar tharu virakangaLinAl perithu avasam viLainthu vidAyththu: With my heart melting for the whores, I lost my self-control due to separation from them after enjoying carnal pleasure; my thirst for passion increased (to the point that)

adar mulai mEl veezhnthu akilodu santhana sEtRinil muzhuki ezhunthu ethir kUppu kai adiyil nakam piRai pOl pada viLaiyAdi: and I simply fell upon their tightening bosom and sank in the smeared paste of sandalwood powder and incence and resurfaced; I played the game of love by getting a crescent-like scar (on my body) from their nail out of hands folded in my front;

parimaLam vinjiya pUkkuzhal sariya marungu udai pOyc chila paRavaikaLin kuralAyk kayal vizhi sOrap pani mukamum kuRu vErppu ezha: their fragrant hair, adorned with flowers, became dishevelled and fell loose; the sari wrapped around their waist was dislodged; the chirping sounds of a few birds were heard; their eyes that looked like kayal fish languished; on their cool face, little beads of perspiration began to appear;

ithazh amuthu uNdu iravAyp pakal pakadiyidumpadi thUrththanai vidalAmO: I imbibed the nectar gushing from their mouth; I carried on this sport of carnal bliss day and night; despite all my actions, is it fair to forsake this debauchee?

sariyai udan kriyai pOtRiya parama patham peRuvArkku aruL tharu ka(N)Nan ranga puram ucchithan marukOnE: He is KrishNa who showers His blessings upon all those realised persons seeking liberation by practising the rituals laid out in Sariyai and Kiriyai methods*; He is the great Lord (RanganAthan) slumbering in Sreerangam; and You are the nephew of that Lord VishNu!

sayilam eRintha kai vEl kodu mayilinil vanthu enai AdkoLal sakam aRiyumpadi kAttiya kurunAthA: Holding prominently in Your hand the Spear that shattered the Mount Krouncha, You appeared before me, mounted on the peacock, and took me over graciously as witnessed by the entire world, Oh Great Master**!

thiri puvanam thozhu pArththipan maruviya maNdapa kOttikaL theruvil viLangus sirAp pa(L)Li malaimeethE theriya iruntha parAkrama: In the streets of this town ThirichirAppaLLi, several palatial halls and temple towers built by the Pallava King are seen; here, on its mountain, You are majestically seated, Oh Valorous One!

uru vaLar kunRu udaiyArkku oru thilatham enum padi thOtRiya perumALE.: Having an abode in this mountain at ThirichirAppaLLi is also Lord SivA in the form of ThAyumAnavar (Father who also comes as the Mother), and You shine as the circular mark on His forehead, Oh Great One!

  * The four methods of worship are:

1.  sariyai:  Worship through service in temples such as doing penance, washing the floor, lighting the lamps, maintaining the flower garden, plucking the flowers for offering, making of garlands, singing of hymns, decorating the deities etc. This is known as 'dhAdha mArgam - sAlOkam'.

2.  kiriyai:  Worship, both inwardly and externally, of a God with a form through daily offerings (pUjA) and with several pUjA materials. This is called 'puthra mArgam - sameepam'.

3.  yOgam:  Inward worship only of a formless God by control of senses, holding the oxygen in the inhaled air and letting it through the six centres of 'kuNdalini chakrA' after understanding each state fully, experiencing the flow of nectar in the 'Lunar zone' between the eyebrows and letting it seep throughout the body and meditating on the full effulgence. This is 'sakha mArgam - sArUbam'.

4.  gnAnam:  Ceasing all external and internal activities, this method consists of worshipping through the medium of intellect alone, seeking the True Knowledge. This is 'san mArgam - sAyujyam'.

** In ThiruvaNNAmalai a saivite poet by name SampanthANdAn challenged AruNagirinAthar saying that he could make DEvi PArvathi appear in person by his poetic prowess. When SampanthANdAn failed in his challenge, AruNagirinAthar sang the Thiruppugazh song "athala sEdanAr Ada" whereupon Lord Murugan emerged from a pillar, mounted on His peacock, and holding the Spear in His hand.
