......... Meaning .........

thodath thuLakkikaL a(p)pakada ninaivikaL kuruttu mattaikaL kumarikaL kamarikaL: These women feign ticklishness when touched. They always harbour treacherous thoughts. They are stupid, lacking the eye of knowledge. They are young damsels, full of blemishes.

suthaic chiRukkikaL kusalikaL isalikaL muzhu mOsam thuRuththa mattaikaL asadikaL kasadikaL: They ditch others knocking them down into the clefts on the ground. They administer sensual pleasure in small doses. They are too cunning. They readily display their grumpiness. These useless women are full of utter treachery. They are foolish and are bereft of any virtue whatsoever.

muzhup purattikaL nazhuvikaL mazhuvikaL thumiththa miththirar vilai mulai ina valai pukuthAmal: They reverse their talk completely in about turn. They are too slippery to be caught. They elude so cleverly that their misdeeds never show up. They grab their suitors' money after flirting with them in a friendly manner. They sell their bosom for a price. I do not wish to be ensnared in the net spread by these whores;

adaiththavarkku iyal sarasikaL virasikaL thariththa vithruma niRam ena vara udan azhaiththu sakkira kiri vaLai padi kodu viLaiyAdi: comparable to these whores, there are others who also block my path towards righteousness; these are both elators and depressors as they indulge in sorcery; deeming them bright as coral, I used to take them home and wasted so much of my time in this world surrounded by the great Mountain ChakravaLAka.

avaththai thaththuvam azhipada iruLaRai vilakkuviththu oru sudar oLi parava na(l)la aruL pukatti un adi iNai aruLuvathu oru nALE: In order that my five mental states (avasthAs*) are done away with and the various mischiefs played on me by the several tenets are removed, and to dispel the darkness of my ignorance so as to spread the bright and True Knowledge throughout my mind, kindly bless me graciously; will there be a day when I shall attain Your hallowed feet, Oh Lord?

padaiththu anaiththaiyum vinai uRa nadanOdu thudaiththa paththini marakatha sorupi Or paraththin ucchiyil nadam navil umai aruL iLaiyOnE: After creating the entire universe, setting everything in motion and protecting them all, She, along with Lord NadarAjar (SivA), destroyed the whole lot; She is chaste and of a complexion of emerald green; She dances on top of the unique cosmos; and You are the younger child of that Goddess UmAdEvi, Oh Lord!

pakaiththa arakkarkaL yaman ulaku uRa amar thoduththa sakkira vaLai karam azhakiyar padik kadaththaiyum vayiRu adai nediyavar marukOnE: He fought against the aggressive demons sending them all to the land of Yaman (God of Death); He is the handsome Lord holding the conch and the disc in His hallowed hands; the huge earthen pot constituting this world was concealed by Him inside His belly; and You are the nephew of that tall Lord VishNu!

kadal thidukkida asurarkaL muRipada koLuth thisaik kiri podipada sudar ayil thiruththi vittu oru nodiyinil valam varu mayil veerA: The sea was in a shell-shock, the demons ran away helter skelter and the mountains in all the eight directions were shattered to pieces when You wielded the bright Spear perfectly and went around the world in a fraction of a second mounted on the peacock, Oh Valorous One!

thinaip punaththu iru thana kiri kumari nal kuRaththi muththodu sasi makaLodu pukazh thiruththaNip pathi malai misai nilai peRu(m) perumALE.: She belongs to the field of millet; She is the young lass bestowed with two mountain-like breasts; She comes from a good lineage of the KuRavAs; along with that pearl-like VaLLi and DEvayAnai, the daughter of IndirANi, You are seated permanently in this famous mountain in ThiruththaNigai, Oh Great One!

* The five avasthAs are: jAgram (wakefulness), soppanam (dream), suzhuththi (sleep), thuriyam (deep sleep) and thuriyAtheetham (total control of breath).
