......... Meaning .........

kuyil ondRu mozhik kuyil ninRu alaiya: She has cuckoo's sweet voice but she is roaming about in agony in the wayside listening to the heartrending cooing of the cuckoo;

kolai inpa malark kaNaiyAlE: because of the menacing (fifth) arrow of flower (blue lily) shot by Manmathan (God of Love) an arrow that could kill,

kuLirum thavaLak kula canthra oLik kodi kongaiyin muththu analAlE: because of the fiery rays of the cool, pale and beautiful moon that scorch the pearl beads of the chain on the bosom of this bright creeper-like girl,

puyal vanthu eRi akkadal ninRu alaRa: because of the stormy wind constantly tossing the waves in the sea making a loud noise,

porum mangaiyar ukka alarAlE: and because of stinging gossip by all the women surrounding her,

puyam onRa mikath thaLarkinRa thanip puyam vanthu aNaiyak kidaiyAthO: she feels very weak and lonely, longing to hug Your shoulders; is she to be denied the pleasure of embracing You?

sayilam kulaiyath thadamum thakara saman ninRu alaiya porum veerA: Oh valorous One, You fought so fiercely that the mount Krouncha was destroyed, the seven hills were shattered and Yaman (God of Death) ran about hither and thither!

tharu mangai vanak kuRa mangaiyar meyth thanam onRum aNith thiru mArpA: DEvayAnai, the damsel of the celestials who grew under the shade of the (wish-yielding) kaRpaga trees, and VaLLi, the damsel of the kuRavAs who lived in the forest of VaLLimalai - both of them hugged Your hallowed chest with their bosom!

payilum kakanap piRai thaN pozhilil paNiyum thaNigaip pathi vAzhvE: The moon in the sky appears below the branches of the tall trees in the cool groves of ThiruththaNigai which is Your abode, Oh my Treasure!

paraman paNiyap poruL anRu aruLi pakar sem kazhanip perumALE.: As He prostrated at Your feet, You graciously preached to Lord SivA the significance of the PraNava ManthrA; and You are the Lord of ThiruththaNigai where red lily blossoms everyday, Oh Great One!

This song is based on the Nayaka-Nayaki Bhavam, where the poet expresses the pang of separation of the heroine from the hero, Murugan.
The cuckoo, the moonlight, waves of the sea, the God of Love Manmathan, His arrows of flowers and the gossip-mongering women are a few of the things that aggravate the agony of separation.
