......... Meaning .........

kalai madavArtham silai adhanAlum: The noise from the bejewelled gossip-mongering women;

gana vaLaiyAlum: the loud monotone from the large conchshell (shanku);

karai mElE karugiya kALam: the piercing cooing of the black cuckoo from the shore, sounding like the heckling voice of Love God;

perugiya thOyam: the ceaseless noise from the vast sea;

karudhalaiyAlum: the inner sound of the thought-waves;

silaiyAlum kolaitharu kAman pala kaNaiyAlum: and the flowery arrows shot by Manmathan (Love God) who is determined to kill her with his sugarcane bow;

kodi idaiyAL nin drazhiyAdhE: are all destroying this damsel with a creeper-like thin waist who is grief-stricken being separated from You.

kuravaNi needum buyamaNi: You are wearing on Your shoulders, decorated with kurA flowers,

neepang kuLir thodai nee than dharuLvAyE: cool garlands of kadappa flowers; and will You not give her one of those garlands graciously?

silai magaL nAyan kalaimagal nAyan: SivA, the consort of PArvathi, BrahmA, the consort of Saraswathi,

thirumagaL nAyan: and Vishnu, the consort of Lakshmi,

thozhum vElA: have all prostrated before You, VElA.*

thinai vana mAnum: VaLLi, the deer-like damsel guarding the millet field,

ganavana mAnum: and DEvayAnai, the damsel who grew up in the KaRpaga Forest in heaven,

seRivudan mEvum thirumArbA: are both embracing You lovingly, Oh hallow-chested One!

thalamagaL meedheN pulavar ulAvum: The world's respected poets are concentrated in

thaNigaiyil vAzh seng kadhir vElA: ThiruththaNigai, which is Your abode, Oh holder of the bright spear!

thaniyavar kUrum thanikeda: To do away with the loneliness of Your devotees who have renounced worldly bondage,

nALum thani mayil ERum perumALE.: You mount Your unique peacock everyday, Oh Great One!

* There are indications that the Trinity prostrated before Murugan at ThiruththaNigai. On the north bank of the nearby river Nandi, there is a shrine for SivA. Vishnu's chakrA weapon that was forcibly taken by ThAraka asuran was redeemed by Murugan as evidenced by Vishnu Theerththam to the west of the temple. Brahma Fountain is half way up the mountain where BrahmA took lessons on creation from Murugan.

This song has been written in the Nayaka-Nayaki BhAva portraying the pangs of separation of the heroine from Lord Murugan.
The scandal-mongering women, the sea, the waves, the moon, the cuckoo, Love God and the flowery arrows are some of the sources which aggravate her agony of separation from the Lord.
